I have been wanting to start a garden for many years and kept putting it off for some reason or another. Well I finally got off of my lazy ass and got going with my square foot garden (http://www.squarefootgardening.com/). I am so excited about this concept and I can't wait to get my seeds in the ground. I am the type of person that if there is too much to do at once my brain just shuts down and I end up doing nothing most of the time. Gardening felt like that to me. Where would it go? How big do I make it? How do I contain it? What do I plant? How many of each vegetable do I plant? AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! So I was very happy and excited when my sister Jaime lent me her SFG book for me to learn a thing or two. I decided to improvise on some of the things because of the cost of a few steps but I don't really think it will make a huge difference and if it does then I will learn my lesson :o)
I had hubby build me a 4 x 4 box and Jake and I started digging away.

And of course Jake had to play a quick game of Tic Tac Toe before we got started
My box was built with wood that was 1 foot wide instead of 6 inches so I wanted to put it into the ground about 6 inches. I then layed down some newspaper instead of weed cloth.

And then I dropped a layer of potting soil on top of the paper and watered it down.

So that was day one. Hopefully within a day or two I will get hubby to go pick up some manure (we live very close to cows) and I will lay down a layer of that and then another layer of potting soil. If all goes as planned I will have my seeds planted on Saturday. Cross your fingers for me.

I am so proud of you!!!! It looks just beautiful and I can't wait to eat some of the yummo things that I know are going to come out of that special spot. You never forget your first one......
Love you bunches sister!
You are going to have so much fun! I saw your blog on the homeschool loop...I love sfg! I started 2yrs ago with a couple in my front yard, then last year I read Made From Scratch: Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life by Jenna Wogenrich and totally lost my mind and filled my whole backyard with boxes! My then 11yr old and I spent a couple of weeks doing 'garden school' listening to KUSC on the crank radio and preparing our beds. We just planted 13 new fruit trees and half a dozen berries--I can't stop! Never have I had so much fun. Once all of your stuff begins to grow and overflow you will be sooo empowered! Kim
