The Start Of My Adventure With Square Foot Gardening

I have been wanting to start a garden for many years and kept putting it off for some reason or another. Well I finally got off of my lazy ass and got going with my square foot garden (http://www.squarefootgardening.com/). I am so excited about this concept and I can't wait to get my seeds in the ground. I am the type of person that if there is too much to do at once my brain just shuts down and I end up doing nothing most of the time. Gardening felt like that to me. Where would it go? How big do I make it? How do I contain it? What do I plant? How many of each vegetable do I plant? AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! So I was very happy and excited when my sister Jaime lent me her SFG book for me to learn a thing or two. I decided to improvise on some of the things because of the cost of a few steps but I don't really think it will make a huge difference and if it does then I will learn my lesson :o)

I had hubby build me a 4 x 4 box and Jake and I started digging away.
And of course Jake had to play a quick game of Tic Tac Toe before we got started
My box was built with wood that was 1 foot wide instead of 6 inches so I wanted to put it into the ground about 6 inches. I then layed down some newspaper instead of weed cloth.
And then I dropped a layer of potting soil on top of the paper and watered it down.
So that was day one. Hopefully within a day or two I will get hubby to go pick up some manure (we live very close to cows) and I will lay down a layer of that and then another layer of potting soil. If all goes as planned I will have my seeds planted on Saturday. Cross your fingers for me.

They Say It's The Happiest Place On Earth...

And that day it was. The little ones had no idea where we were going until we were parking. When I finally told them Lexi was a little skeptical but believed me when she read the signs. Joshy read the signs too but was still convinced that I was playing a joke on them. I think he was a believer when we finally stepped into the park.

What an incredible day! We had the time of out lives. They were both very weary of the rides and hesitated each time on the way in. But on the way out they were both laughing and saying how fun it was.

Then there came Space Mountain. The legs were shaking and the pleads to get out of the line were fierce. I knew they would love the ride so I made them tough it out. They got on and they screamed their heads off and when it was over they begged to go on it again. They haven't stopped talking about the "best ride in the world" since.

I am so happy I waited till they were a little older to take them for the first time because this is a day I know they will never forget.

3 days and counting

3 days till what? You might ask?

In three days we are taking the kids to Disneyland for the very first time!!! Jake (16) has gone about 3 or 4 times but my little guys (6&8) have never ever been. I am so excited for them!!! It is a surprise, the little ones don't know yet. They know it is daddy's birthday that day and we might take him rock climbing or something but they have no clue where we are actually going.
I can't wait to see their little faces light up when they finally figure it out. I just really hope that they are open to go on all of the rides. I guess we will start small and slow and work our way up to my favorites, Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain.

OH I can't wait till Thursday.
